WWII Veterans to Visit Washington D.C. War Memorials

Project: We are taking 36 WWII veterans to visit the National WWII Memorial in May 2010. We will visit the WWII Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Wall, Arlington Cemetery, and the Capitol. (We'll also go to the Marine/Iwo Jima, Air Force, and Navy Memorials)

When: We will leave Memphis on Friday, May 21st. and return Monday, May 24th. We're calling it a three-day pass.

Why: We are losing 1000 WWII veterans a day in the US, so our time to honor them is quickly coming to an end. This is an urgent project.

Oct 09: From the time they left Memphis until they returned, these men were given cheers, handshakes, salutes, hugs, and tears from people around the nation. They were shocked by the response! They felt so respected and appreciated. It was much more than visiting the WWII Memorial- it was a trip of honor.

WWII veterans: The word spread quickly when the October trip returned, and Forever Young was bombarded with calls from WWII vets. We now have 50 on the list who wish to go. On this next trip, we have a group of POWs, B-29 pilots, a B-17 tailgunner, nurses, medics, a Normandy soldier, and others.

Why a group? These men and women are too elderly to travel alone; therefore, knowing they can travel with a group makes all the difference. We have a much older group in May with many over 90. We have two brothers, 90 and 94, and they are bringing their cousin who is a young 87. :) We will have volunteers and a nurse on the trip.

Sponsorship: We are asking businesses, Sunday school classes, friends, families, clubs, etc., to sponsor or help sponsor a veteran. The cost is $930, which includes:

  • * Nonstop round-trip ticket from Memphis to Washington DC
  • * 3 nights in a hotel
  • * All meals
  • * Motorcoach transportation in DC
  • * Hospitality room at the hotel for them to visit and share their memorbilia

Family Members: The veterans may bring someone with them; however, they are responsible for their own expenses. What an amazing time for these men to share this experience with their loved ones! They will never forget it.

Deadline: The last payment for the trip is March 17 and we still need about 12 sponsorships. Please consider helping us, for we value every penny.

Forever Young,Inc.: Forever Young is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, so all donations are tax-deductible. We want the donations to go to our veterans' wishes; therefore, we're all volunteers.

What the veterans had to say: Boyd Maize from Germantown said, "This was the most perfect trip I've ever been on." Ken Thomas from Lakeland stated, "I've traveled to Hawaii, Bermuda, Nova Scotia, etc., but none of them compared to this trip." Forrest Benskin from Bartlett said, " I thought this was going to be some little trip; therefore, I was not prepared for what a big deal this was. This has been one of the greatest experiences of my life."
